"speak" is a young adult novel focusing on the struggles of the main character, Melinda, facing the trauma of her sexual assault. When recreating the book cover, I prioritized evoking empathy for the protagonist by ripping up pages in the book to create a chaotic unconnectable puzzle for the viewer's first introduction much like Melinda trying to sort out her thoughts and emotions throughout the book; I further drew from the plot of the novel by watercoloring a tree across the pages, a nod to the setting where her journey begins.
